Chicago’s shoreline has been busy this summer. Just last week the Windy City Sentinel brought you coverage of the Air and Water Show, where fighter jets roared across the sky and crowds packed the beaches. Now the attention has shifted from the skies to the waters, as witnesses reported seeing a massive serpentine creature moving through Lake Michigan earlier today.
Several beachgoers near North Avenue Beach described the figure as long and dark, cutting across the waves with surprising speed. One eyewitness told the Sentinel that the creature “rose out of the water higher than any fish I’ve ever seen. It had the shape of something ancient, almost like a dragon or a serpent.”
The sighting sparked immediate speculation. Some believe the creature could be the legendary Lake Michigan Sea Serpent, a cryptid reported in stories going back to the nineteenth century. Others suggest it may have been a giant sturgeon, an enormous fish capable of growing to unexpected sizes in the Great Lakes.
Chicago Police confirmed that they received multiple calls about “something unusual in the water” but could not verify the reports. Officials with the Shedd Aquarium have not issued a statement, though staff members in the past have pointed out that Lake Michigan is known for producing optical illusions when light and waves collide.
For now, the identity of the mysterious lake dweller remains a mystery. Whether it is a legendary creature finally making a return or just the lake playing tricks on the eye, the story has already made waves across social media. Locals are flocking to the lakefront with cameras in hopes of capturing another glimpse.
The Windy City Sentinel will continue to monitor this developing story.
